Join playwright Kenny Finkle for an interactive reading of excerpts from his work in progress "1993 Melancholy" and discuss the process of writing and developing this unique theatrical piece.
Originally developed as part of the Keen Playwrights Lab, "1993 Melancholy" is an audio play with music. Performed live like old-fashioned radio drama, the piece is intended for audiences to listen to with their eyes closed while reclining in a comfortable position.
The play is a series of inter-connected episodes and original songs following four characters who all live in the same building in Alphabet City, in the year 1993. The playwright plays "finkle", a character in the piece, a host or narrator à la Alfred Hitchcock. Part coming of age, part pulp, part Genet, part mystery, part true crime - the stories explore the many ways America was on the verge of massive change in 1993.
"1993 Melancholy" is being developed with support by the National Endowment for the Arts.
